Bill Small, Singer/Songwriter

You know what irritates me? When I go looking on the web for something that isn't there. So, since I've been searching in vain for any reference online to one of my favorite songwriters and probably my most significant vocal influence ever, I've decided to put one up myself.

I don't really have very much information, but I did make mp3s of some stuff, without permission (duh - haven't heard from the guy in... er... Seven Years). However, if someday in the future anyone ever does a search on the words "Bill Small" and "songwriter" or "folk" or "blues", maybe this page will come up and they won't be as frustrated as I have been.

The first recordings I have are some tunes I took from a sort of going away party, when Bill was leaving Boston to move to Chicago. A bunch of wasted people with guitars, bongos, and tape recorders... erm... do I really need to make more excuses after saying that much? I have no justification whatsoever for wasting disk space on 9 minutes of hammered people playing Stormy Monday, except that I liked Bill's vocals on it a lot, the guitarists tickled me pink, and the whole thing makes me laugh.

Bill caught up with me in 1995 or something like that, and he sent me some tapes of his more recent stuff a few months later. One of the tapes he sent me was a band he was working with down in Austin, called Stringbones. These are some tunes from one of their sessions:

Stringbones - circa 1995
The Players: ??? - Ben White? Bryan Keeling? Charles Rieser?
Anyone care to fill me in?

I'll put up some more tunes later, when I can find tapes. Some tunes I used to have (tapes of Heavy Weather, for instance) are missing, because I foolishly had only copies of irreplaceable music in my car when it got stolen a few years ago. Hopefully someday I can scam another copy of that somewhere.

HEY!! Good news!

As of January 2005, Bill now has a website of his own, but I'm going to leave mine up anyway, with his permission. Check out the latest from Bill Small!
